Shu Powders Solar System

Shu Powders Africa is always searching for new ways to create a more sustainable operational landscape. One of the biggest decisions we’ve made in this regard has been the significant investment in a 643kW solar system to reduce reliance on South Africa’s state-owned electricity supplier, Eskom, which is primarily powered by fossil fuels.

This move was driven not only by the need to reduce energy consumption and associated costs but also by a commitment to sustainability. As part of our ongoing efforts to meet our carbon footprint reduction goals, we are targeting a 50% reduction by 2030.


Investment Overview

The solar system installation represents an investment of R 7,738,000 (USD 425,000), with an initial target payback period of 5.3 years. However, due to ongoing power shortages and load shedding in the first couple of years, the payback period is expected to extend. Despite this, the system continues to provide long-term energy savings and an important step toward carbon neutrality.

This system is designed to provide consistent and sustainable power, helping Shu Powders reduce dependence on the grid while cutting down on operational costs. Additionally, we can monitor the system’s performance in real-time through an app, ensuring maintenance is carried out as needed for optimal performance.


Energy consumption and efficiency

Through the solar system, we are able to generate the majority of the energy needed for our furnace production. The system’s efficiency and impact on energy consumption can be seen in the graphs below:

Solar Panel Cleaning

Routine solar panel cleaning has also proven to be vital for maintaining high energy output. After a recent cleaning, we observed a 35% increase in energy yield, confirming the importance of regular maintenance for maximum efficiency.

Next Steps in Carbon Footprint Reduction

Looking ahead, we are committed to further reducing our environmental impact. Our next major step is securing a dedicated electricity line from Eskom’s nearest substation. This will allow Shu Powders to enter a curtailment program, which eliminates the issues caused by load shedding and power outages. With the dedicated line, our solar system will also be able to supply up to 20% of our total energy consumption, running more efficiently and sustainably.

Additionally, we plan to export any excess solar energy back to the national grid during plant maintenance or shutdown periods to help support local communities. To reach our goal of 50% carbon footprint reduction by 2030, we are exploring the option of purchasing green energy from newly established independent power producers through electricity wheeling or, when available, from Eskom itself.
